GRAPHALLOY®
HIGH TEMPERATURE BAKERY OVEN DOOR LATCH

Customer:

Bakery Oven Manufacturer
Washington

Problem:

A grease lubricated ball bearing cam follower was originally used as the latch on the oven door.  Initial price was the reason this cam follower was selected. However, the 550 F maximum baking temperature quickly caused the grease to solidify and prevent the cam follower from rotating. A dry graphite-based lubricant was then used in place of grease. The dry lubricant prevented the balls in the ball bearing from rolling, causing the balls to skid and damage the bearing races. In time, the cam follower locked up.

Solution:

A 1217-16-GM120.3 GRAPHALLOY Cam Follower was selected because the OEM was familiar with the dry running properties of GRAPHALLOY. The OEM has used GRAPHALLOY bushings in other oven applications for more than 10 years. The OEM was not aware that GRAPHALLOY Cam Followers were available.

Results:

An initial order of 100-GRAPHALLOY Cam Followers was followed by a second two months later. The Cam Followers are working without incident and several hundred have been sold to the OEM.
