Background

GRAPHALLOY pump components, case rings, and bushings

A nuclear-products operation recently contacted Graphalloy about replacement wear components for pumps used in a heavy-water application. The request included three legacy pump drawings for a suction case ring, case ring, and channel bushing.

Each drawing specified nickel-grade GRAPHALLOY as the required material. The engineering team needed to confirm the appropriate current grade while preserving the material intent of the original pump design.

Solution

After reviewing the drawings and operating conditions, a Graphalloy engineer evaluated the heavy-water service, temperature range, mating material, and required running clearances. Nickel-grade GRAPHALLOY was confirmed as the appropriate material family for the replacement components, and the three parts were quoted to the supplied drawings.

Results

The customer received a clear replacement path for all three pump components without changing the original material specification. The review also preserved important application knowledge contained in drawings created for earlier generations of the equipment.

Conclusion

Graphalloy is able to handle temperature extremes, corrosive liquids, and upset conditions, making it a great match for the necessary reliability of nuclear pumps.
